What is Pilates?

Pilates is a mind-body exercise developed by the late Joseph Pilates.  It focuses on developing a strong & flexible core.  Your core consists of not just your abdominal muscles (as many think!) but also your trunk, buttocks & pelvis as well.  When these muscles are used correctly, the back is protected & you develop a strong & supple spine.  In many traditional workouts not all muscles are trained evenly which results in muscular imbalances – a primary cause of injury and chronic back pain.  In Pilates, the whole body is conditioned, from the wrists to the ankles!  The exercises can be performed on a mat and/or specialized spring-loaded equipment such as the Reformer and the Cadillac.  Emphasis is place on proper body alignment & quality of controlled movements (not quantity) coupled with specific breath patterns.

The STOTT PILATES™ method is a modern approach to Pilates that is continuously being adapted to reflect the most up-to-date knowledge of exercise science/sports medicine and spinal rehabilitation. This ensures a safe yet highly effective workout. It is athletic based and aims to achieve optimal functional fitness. Due to the numerous modifications and varied exercise equipment & accessories (e.g. Foam roller, Fitness Circle®, Toning balls™, Bosu®, Mini Stability Ball™, Stability Ball™, Flex-bands®), each exercise can be adapted to different fitness levels.
